Physiological regulation and pathological dysregulation of tau in vivo: the surprising impact of thermoregulation.
Hypothermia during aging has been suggested to contribute to AD pathogenesis. Here we demonstrate that temperature is a powerful regulator of tau protein, a major hallmark of AD. We present evidence showing that temperature can regulate tau phosphorylation, splicing and secretion, that it can increase or lower tau pathology, and that it probably plays an important role in the regulation of tau physiological functions, especially during the normal circadian cycle. Moreover, we show that pharmacological targeting of thermoregulation can alleviate tau pathology.
